EVENING UPDATE: they came within $250 of my final offer! I'm holding strong and told them my previous offer was the best I can do! They then agreed, I'm signing the papers tomorrow
Just went back to check out that local TL Type S. I had them elavuate my Civic and the lowballed me sooo bad. They offered me low auction price $6000! $6500 if I did the deal today! Lol
AVERAGE trade in on my car is $7500, and my car is way above average. So I low balled them back. They didn't counter, which I thought was interesting, but came in to tell me all the woes of dealership operations, like reconditioning cars and overhead blah blah blah.
So I gave then my low offer and then had to return to work. We'll see what they come back with!

Kinja'd!!!

Have a white TL because it's White Wednesday

UPDATE: just got their counter, they're so close! We're only $850 away.

TL-S, such a nice car! I especially like the one you shared, I like the black with red theme they carried from the wheels to the grill

You could always put your Civic on Craigslist and see what kind of offers you get before accepting their trade offer.

One thing worth noting is that in most states (at least this is how it works here in Wisconsin where I am) if you trade in your old car to a dealer, the trade value gets deducted from the value of the new car that gets taxed.

So for example if the TL costs $15k and they give you $6k for your Civic, you would pay sales tax on $9k. If your local sales tax is 5% then that would be $300 in taxes you don't have to pay.

Not that you should accept a lowball trade offer, but that'll help you when comparing to any private party offers.

Thanks! The one I'm trying to get is black. I found another one that's a year older with 20k less miles, but it's 150 miles away... We'll see what happens with this car

Yeah I figured I'd have a hard time selling it myself because no one wants a low optioned manual civic. I knew they would low ball me but not THAT low

Sell your car private party and make bank on it. Why even play games with the dealership if you know what they're going to offer you on it?

I figure I'll have a hard time selling it. I've already had two offers once people heard I was looking for a new car, because they know how well I maintain it. Then they found out its a manual...
I'm in no rush to get into a new car, I just want one, so I'd rather not sell my car privately. Then I'd NEED a car and be at a disadvantage.

I've been seeing way too many dealers pulling the "this will go straight to auction so we will give you 'auction' price" trick recently.

They didn't even drive it. He just walked around it, started it, and checked for codes. It was weird

being devil's advocate, where did you get your average trade-in information?

NADA. Average trade in is $7450 and clean trade in is $8275. My car is somewhere in the middle.

Counter with an offer that puts it $500 away (so $350 more) and sell your Civic on your own for $7-8k?

What price are they giving you as their counter?

I would argue that NADA and KBB tend to be higher than real world market numbers. The one closest is edmunds at least in the north east US.

I work in the industry and when compared to wholesale numbers and auction numbers they tend to be higher. I am not sure where NADA and KBB get their sources and compile the numbers. Before the internet trade values were based on a weekly publication called the Black Book (which is still used today online) and even then NADA and KBB numbers are higher in comparison.

Try listing your car for the NADA average number and measure your success from there.

Also, if a dealer was to list a pre-owned car based on its' NADA or KBB value this price is seen to be higher than most market listings and it would be harder to sell that unit based on the pricing.

I would also try your local CarMax for a purchase figure as they sometimes put a higher number on cars.

They countered $19k and $7200 for my car. I'm going to tell them I'll take it at $18.5, $7200 for my car. That puts my payment right where I want it. They want the original steelies instead of my Accord alloys, so I will make up some money there too.

That's not a bad idea, I could check into that before I counter again.

How was the condition of the car? Did you check all the stuff I told you?

If you can't get them to budge on the $19k see what they can throw in for free (fixing cosmetic stuff, getting it thoroughly detailed before pick up, floor mats, blow job from receptionist etc.)

If no freebies highest you should go is $18.7 if their being super stubborn.

Definitely try CarMax - when I sold my Ranger (replaced with a GTI) last month, they offered me over 2x what the dealer did, and about 1.5x what I expected to get.

The car was really good condition and really clean! They're already going to fix the curb rash and the center armrest for me. They actually countered $18,999 so I'm going to come back with 18,499 just to be a dick

Yup for my customers I run trade evals through Edmumds TMV and I will sometimes put an inquiry into WeBuyAnyCar.com. Edmunds tends to be pretty on the money. Also since I am not buying their car but rather brokering the deal I try to set a conservative expectation for a trade. I'd rather tell them they will most likely get 22k for their car and have a dealer offer 26, than the other way around.

Add up Edmunds, KBB and NADA and divide by 3? Or will that cause a ripple in the universe?

They came in $200 under where I'm at with the dealer. :( A manual transmission is both a blessing and a curse.

that is your litmus test so the dealer isn't too far off. I would take the $6,500 if you really want the TL and just try to barter with the used car.

You think they'll budge? IMO if the car was going to be sold it would've sold before the New Year. Did they tell you how long they've had it?

Kinja'd!!!

Teach me your ways! Seriously I got to know how you negotiated that. So they came back with $18,750? Or was it a combination of the price of the car and the value on the trade in?

Kinja'd!!! Sn210 > Rico
01/08/2014 at 21:18

Kinja'd!!!1

Lol well they came down to $18,999 and $7200 for my car. I thought that was a fair price for a tl-s but not fair for my car. I went to Carmax on the advice of our fellow Opponauts. They came in with an offer for $7k for my car, so $7200 from the dealer was fair for my car. So I offered to give $18499 for the tl and they'd give me the $7200 for my car they had offered before. They came back with $18750. I told them $18500 was the best I could do. Bam, we had a deal. Plus, they are fixing the rims and center armrest AND they want my car with the original steelies, I get to keep my Accord alloys and Extreme Contact Continentals. I'm also ripping out my sub, so I can sell that and my wheels/tires on the CL. Not bad not bad.
